National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month, a time to celebrate the power of words, rhythm, and self-expression. Poetry offers a unique way to explore language by playing with sounds, patterns, and meaning in ways that support both creativity and communication development.
At Sound, we are incorporating poetry into our work this month with both children and adults. Poems can strengthen phonological awareness, build vocabulary, and support prosody (rhythm and melody of speech). Through rhyme, repetition, and storytelling, poetry helps make language more engaging and memorable.
For children, reading and reciting poems can support early literacy skills and listening comprehension. For adults, poetry can be a meaningful way to reconnect with voice, whether for personal expression, vocal practice, or confidence in communication.
This month, try reading a favorite poem out loud, writing your own, or sharing one with your family. However you engage with it, poetry is a simple and powerful way to celebrate language.
